Exploring the future Ep 2: Why optimism is essential to create a better future

By

Here is – finally – the second episode of my vlog, on the critical topic of optimism. More episodes coming soon!

Here is the transcript:

I believe that the ONLY way we can create a better future is to be optimistic.

And I also believe that optimism is a choice.

So let’s define our terms here.

For me optimism is not blindly believing that the world is going to get better, that everything is wonderful.

It is believing that we can take action in order to be able create a better world.

Pessimism is believing that whatever we do, we will not be able to create a better world. Which basically means that people give up.

Of course there are people who say, ‘oh, I’m not an optimist, I’m not a pessimist, I’m a realist’.

Let’s be clear, there is no such thing as being a realist.

Humans are subjective, we can’t be objective, we are shaped by our personalities, by our experiences, by our models of how we see the world.

So we can’t be realistic, we really have a choice here.

So as optimists, it is not saying that everything is wonderful, everything is rosy. We must squarely face the deep challenges, the deep problems that we have and recognise they are real.

At the same time we must see that there is positive movement, there is positive potential, and that there are things that we can do today to shape a better tomorrow.

So we do have a choice. Either we can believe that the world is all going to hell as a pessimist

Or it is possible to believe that we can do the things that will shape a better tomorrow.

So please, be an optimist, believe that we can do some things that can all take the action that move us towards a better future for all of us.
