ABC 7:30 Report:

Over the course of this week, we have highlighted some of the economic environment and social issues Australia will confront if treasuries projected population boom becomes reality over the next 40 years. The water we need for our very survival, the roofs over our heads, the critical transport systems, the basic protection of our environment. Tonight we look at another critical issue in which this nation has sometimes been brittle. Social Cohesion. Can we confidently manage a 60% population boost in 40 years?

In 40 years with the projected population of 35 million the face of the Australia is likely to have a more ethnic Asian look, believes futurologist Ross Dawson.

Ross Dawson:

We’re going to look far more Asian, we really will be an Asian country, as we’ve got more of people have come from that ancestory and far, far deeper ties in terms of trade and economy and culture to the rest of the Asian region.

It will be an extraordinary proportion of people in Australia in the year 2050 who will be 65 or older. Clearly these voters will be expressing themselves by how they vote and politician political parties will have no choice but to espouse policies that are friendly to the elderly.

Ultimately the only way in which Australia can experience the real dynamic growth of coming decades is through immigration. The birth rate has increased a little bit in recent years, but that will never be enough to do more than just maintain our population. If we want to be part of a really exciting part of the global economy and global society of Australia must have immigration and the issue is; how do we effectively manage that?

SkyNews:

Mobility a key way for companies to be more efficient when it comes to IT budgets. IT analyst Ross Dawson saying better collaboration can increase competitiveness.

Ross Dawson:

There are a few things which a few types of technologies which support that contribution from people inside the organization the participation and the flow. And also ones that create both greater efficiencies in the organization and greater productivity. So some of the tools that enable that are first of all mobility so that you can, people cannot just have mobile email but also be able to be involved in the business processes as they move around. What the broad array of what had been called Web 2.0 technology such as blogs, and wikis, and social networks in the enterprise that enable a greater understanding of where the resources are and enable people to collaborate more effectively, efficiently and get products to market quicker and I think an increasingly important application that is video where people can not just in formal video conferences but also desktop to desktop which where people are or for mobile devices to have conversations to be able to engage in business relationships which create value.

So these are some of the technologies which I think are critical for building collaborative high-performance organizations will be successful both in challenging times now and also to be able to be in positioned for the up-term when it comes before long.

SkyNews:

Do you have any examples of large companies that have already invested in these kinds of solutions?

Ross Dawson:

Certainly there are many organizations both globally and in Australia that have been investing in these technologies in a variety of ways. One company that is being innovative in the space is Westpac. We’re using a whole variety of new tools to be able to get more greater participation, greater of visibility, and better ways of working. The CSIRO in Australia is again using a whole array of different tools for how it communicates both inside the organization and outside the organization and many of the major large organizations and financial services and professional services have tried to find ways to be able to particularly tap the inclinations of some of their younger, more talented people who are used to using many of these technologies in their everyday lives, and expect to see them as part of the way which they work, and look to for these as ways to work better, and more efficiently, and productively.
