I work for an organisation where access to FaceBook/Twitter and the like is completely restricted and everything works fine - after all, we're all there to work and paid to do exactly that. If you need to update your FaceBook/Twitter narrative surely it can wait until you can do it at leisure in your own time. From what I've seen of content of both I don't think the world is being deprived any great masterpieces just yet.... Or am I really and truly missing something?

Very interesting Tina. Well at least they're establishing a social media policy, which puts them ahead of many organizations.
If this is done well, including the effective communication and change around the policy, that has the potential to be a massive enabler of the ideas you're suggesting and more. Let's hope so... :-)

I completely agree with this, and it's good to see that the company I work for isn't the only one dragging its feet on social media policies. Our department deals with social services--without going into specifics, we're under the umbrella of a very big company, and our facility gets almost no mention on its website other than a star on a Google map to show our location. A Facebook page would be ideal to keep our clients up to date on upcoming events and give them a one-stop location for links to information that's repeatedly requested from us (foreclosure avoidance, property tax appeal information, links to local school district websites.) We've received requests for just about everything imaginable in our line of work, and if we want our clients to be able to start using online resources on their own, this would be a good starting point.
But meanwhile we're still waiting for corporate to finish composing their social media policy. I completely understand they have to go through the proper channels for things like this (though, as mentioned, I would think this could easily be added into our current IS policies), and they did confirm with me this week that they have a draft version they're playing around with, so I'm glad it's on their radar.
