Yep. I definitely agree most companies that try being 'social' are going to struggle to do this well.

I'm going to send you a quarter for using "nous"!
Not that there isn't a side for humanity in business relationships, but so many businesses have the friendly stuff in the marketing material, but don't follow through with the rest of the business. I worked with some great customer service people in the past, and they were good because they were empowered from the highest level of the company. If you're going to be a humane company, you'd better be prepared to be consistent about it.

Very interesting point Chris.
I happen to disagree, as I think that people have the nous to extricate the business and social of their relationships. You cannot have a social relationship with a company, but companies employ people, who you can have a relationship with. There is a role for 'humanity' in business relationships.
It's possible I'm wrong. We are currently experimenting with 'social' business. There's no question that many or even most companies are going to do this wrong, and it will be at times disastrous. But those companies that do it right will do extremely well for themselves (and their customers).

I just finished reading "Predictably Irrational", and one of the chapters talks about the dangers of corporations engaging with their clients as if they are social, rather than business engagements. As soon as that first "late fee" shows up, there's a sense of real violation. As people's identity becomes increasingly portable, many companies will make the mistake of pretending to be personally engaged in what is fundamentally a business transaction and will learn the hard way that people have different requirements and interactions for the two.
