Since we don’t have the technology yet, we don’t know where we might get to. The first step is “negligible senescence’, which means never growing older than current age. However if we have that technology it is feasible to envisage reversing the ageing process – to a point – though that may never be possible.

Well, death will still happen. People will fall off mountains and such. Maybe more of that will happen as people attempt to jazz up life by taking more risks. Then, as more people die accidentally, those left behind will grow more depressed eventually. So they will long for death, become more curious about it…

A related one is that it is more than likely that immortality will only be available to those who are sufficiently wealthy…

I worry: if we start living (healthy) forever, or even just a really long time, does society get static? Do I want to see Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court for the next 400years? Do I want to watch Warren Buffet be the richest guy for the next 400years? How do we enable change when vested interests have centuries to consolidate power? Infirm aging and death are the term limits of last resort.

Yes, I’d want to live forever. No, I am sure I cannot begin to comprehend exactly what that would mean.

It’s not Bill Murray endlessly reliving the same day and using that time to learn to play the piano. It’s ceaseless existence. My accepted notion of Time would no longer have any meaning.

The caveat would have to be the ability to terminate at will.
