Although accounting is a long way from rectifying this distortion, businesspeople need to start tracking this investment and face up to the fact that their most important assets are knowledge-related intangibles like people, processes, IP and external partners.
When organizations say they are cutting costs, they are often really cutting investment in their intangible productive capacity--and cutting off their ability to innovate in the future.
