In reply to Anonymous. I largely agree JB. Reputation is indeed an element of identity. You have described the purer identity elements of their possible offering, and no doubt Google sees the potential of this space. However reputation, while tied to identity, is a distinct space, and personally I believe that this is a significant part of where they see value in coming years.

Ross, an “Identity Engine” would be more correct . Reputation is one attribute of one’s identity. Your relationships and how you view those relationships via Google + Circles is another aspect of your identity.

The more data and information that Google can compile about people and essentially construct “identities” for people, the bigger its market becomes. Google’s “future products that leverage that [identity] information” would be deveoped for this bigger market. Advertisers would only be one segment of that market. This is not limited to Google; it is also that holy grail that Facebook is seeking.

Connect Eric Schmidt’s statement that Google + is “primarily..an identity service” with the rollout of Google + “identity verification badges” and the picture becomes more complete. Identity verficiation badges will help mitigate the risk that the information Google has assembled about a person belongs to someone else. In turn, this helps make Google’s people identity offerings more attractive to its bigger market.

Lest anyone think that these badges will only be for celebrities, as reported by PC World, based on a Google+ post by Google official Wen-Ai Yu, “Later on, the verification badges will be available to a bigger scope of users
who aren’t famous or broadly popular on the site.”
