Hi Paddy, I understand the Nielsen methodology is largely based on recruited panels, so they would all be residents.

The other side of your point is that kiwis are also inveterate travellers so residents take to social media to keep in touch with family and friends who are overseas :-)

Hi Ross,

Thanks for the article, as an online marketer currently living in New Zealand, I found it very interesting.

I do have a question on the data though. Do you know if it is taken from residents of New Zealand as opposed to "anyone in New Zealand"? Your last line says "New Zealanders" which is the only reference I could see to who the data may cover.

New Zealand obviously has a huge tourism industry and attracts a large amount of young backpackers / tourists who like to stay connected with home through the use of social media. New Zealand is also known for employing overseas travellers who stay for a few months at a time, again they will naturall use social to keep in touch with home.

Do you think this could be a reason for the high amount of social media usage?

Cheers.

Hi Ross,
Social media became a powerful tool post-quakes in Christchurch. From simply checking in with other people, to quickly organising mass assistance efforts. I personally saw a lot more uptake by friends and family who previously would shy away from using the likes of Facebook or Twitter.

Hi Ross. I agree that New Zealand also has a mentality of connection. As a small isolated country we increasingly understand the power of networks and of looking outwards. For many New Zealanders this has included overseas travel. Increasingly it is through the use of technology and the development of technology hubs of innovation is on the rise. However we also have expensive bandwidth and slow speeds. This makes it difficult to share large amounts of data (such as that needed by Weta Workshop for example) and may slow down our social media growth as well. NZers are typically good at coming up with ideas but not so good at implementing them from an idea to a sustainable business. Linking globally is a great way for us to work together and create viable networks of learning.
Your talk in Auckland sounds great. Come down to Christchurch sometime. I always enjoy your expert knowledge and tweets. Thanks for the latest stats.
